Google may be sued by Brazilian prosecutors, if they obtain permission from a federal judge to file a civil lawsuit against the search giant, on grounds of withholding user information for a separate criminal investigation. According to the lawsuit, Google has to either pay up a fine of $61 million (32 million pounds) or dissolve its Brazilian unit altogether, if it does not submit the required information.
The prosecutors have alleged that several community pages on Google's popular social network site, Orkut, have been used to organize criminal activity and promote child pornography. The prosecutors now want a federal judge to order Google to hand over user information on those Orkut pages that are being investigated for promoting crimes. The lawsuit also stated that Google will have to shell out a daily fine of at least 200,000 reais ($93,000), if it does not comply with this request.
In addition, the complaint requests that Google be forced to pay a fine of 130 million reais ($61 million) for collective damages caused by its refusal to obey previous judicial orders.
