The server market has been on a roll with powerful and inexpensive chips bringing quantum increases in processing and memory management. While Intel is busy working on its next-generation Woodcrest server and workstation processors, another move announcing that the future lies in multicore design instead of single core designs was made with AMD releasing the last scheduled upgrade to its family of single-core Opteron processors.
The new 256 and 856 Opteron processors increase the clock speed from the earlier maximum speed of 2.8 GHz in x54 models to 3.0 GHz. According to AMD, the two-way and eight-way CPUs are shipping today, while the 156 model, which will be targeting one-way systems, will become available within 30 days.Computer vendors IBM, Hewlett-Packard and Sun Microsystems have also announced they would add the new chips to their workstation and server lines.
