Is Resident Evil 5 Racist?
By: Avinash Bali   |   Aug 02,2007
Watching a white man slaughter hordes of black zombies may seem like harmless violent fun for most of us, but for conspiracy theorists it’s just another stupid conspiracy theory to sink their teeth in and here’s what one such blogger who writes for the Black Looks, a blog that deals with African women had to say:

The new Resident Evil video game depicts a white man in what appears to be Africa killing Black people. The Black people are supposed to be zombies and the white man’s job is to destroy them and save humanity. "I have a job to do and I’m gonna see it through."

This is problematic on so many levels, including the depiction of Black people as inhuman savages, the killing of Black people by a white man in military clothing, and the fact that this video game is marketed to children and young adults. Start them young... fearing, hating, and destroying Black people.

So is Capcom racist on some level or is the author of that article smoking some seriously potent stuff?

Thanks to evil avatar for the heads up.

L-O-L it takes place in somalia or some shit. Do you really expect them to be white doods? Would it be better if they were guys with ak47s? I mean that way we would have an excuse to shoot them. Stop pulling the racial card. This shits rediculous. How about they pixelate them all torqoise and purple, then all problems solved :D
WHITE DEVIL @ Aug 28,2008
...Where were the cries of "racism" when we were slaughtering white zombies wholesale?
[GA]Legend @ Jul 30,2008
he is smoking some serious stuff
brown @ Jul 23,2008
So if it's a bunch of white zombies, I should be able to call it racist?
If they can, then I can.
bobby bob jim bob @ Jul 22,2008
2nd part of my comment.
There have been many main characters from the Resident Evil series not just white
(main character)Jim Chapman a black man from Resident Evil Outbreak # 1 and # 2
(main character)Mark Wilkins an african american from RE Outbreak 1&2
(main character)Yoko Suzuki an asian girl from RE Outbreak 1&2
Ada Wong an asian Woman that is a support character in the RE1 game and RE4 game and later became one of the main characters in Resident Evil Umbrella Corperation.
Carlos Olivera a south american protagonist from Resident Evil 3
Biohazard2 @ Jun 14,2008
2nd part to the comment.
Also in the Resident Evil games there were other races that were in.
Like Ada Wong a bad ass asian.
Carlos Olivera the protagonist from south america in the Resident Evil 3 game.
Mark Wilkins a black man, one of the many main characters of RE Outbreak 1&2
Jim Chapman another black man, another one of the many main characters in RE Outbreak 1&2
Yoko Suzuki most likely asian, another main character in the RE Outbreak 1&2 series.
The fact is that you people haven't seen or played or seen the other games to even be assure that this game is racist.
If capcom made a game Starring a African American man or woman.
Many people will say that's racist on account that "An african american is getting attacked by wild zombies" or something similar to that.
Biohazard @ Jun 14,2008
Well Resident Evil 5 isn't racist you know. You idiots take this "racism" so seriously now days, it isn't a big deal anymore we are all human beings afterall. and with that said with a new setting well it just so happens that in a new Resident Evil movie the setting will take place in japan.
and whats this about different races in the games?
well it also happens that in the game Resident Evil Outbreak #1 and File#1. 3 of the main characters are different in race
1 is Yoko Suzuki an asian, 2. Jim Chapman a black man, and 3. Mark Wilkins another black man.
seriously just because Resident Evil 5 happens to have AFRICAN AMERICAN enemies doesn't mean it's racist. In resident evil 3 one of the main protagonist was Carlos Olivera a south american.
Biohazard @ Jun 14,2008
Resident Evil 5 isn't racist.
Sprite Senbon @ Jun 14,2008
You are all idiots.
There was a black man hero in Resident Evil Outbreak and Resident Evil Outbreak File# 2
Black Man # 1 is "Mark Wilkins" he is a "war veteran
Black Man number 2 is "Jim Chapman" he is a subway employee
and for other races umm lets see...
Yoko Suzuki a college student she is asian of course
what about Carlos Olivera a south american most likely hispanic..
You guys just need to quit complaining about racism seriously
it's no big deal anymore
we are all human beings at that.
here are some characters from the resident evil games from different races..
Ada Wong a bad ass asian female in the Resident Evil game.
Carlos Olivera the south american protagonist of Resident Evil 3
Mark Wilkins an african american man one of the main characters in the Resident Evil outbreak series
Biohazard @ Jun 14,2008
My honest opinion, I don't think Resident Evil 5 is being racist. Throughout the whole "Resident Evil" video game series, there have been different settings. Most of them in deserted cities or towns, but that all changed when "Resident Evil 4" came out. Resident evil 4 took place in Europe. The producers and Directors of Resident Evil 5 are trying to have that same idea as RE4. Why do most games have to take place in place in the United States? How about somewhere else like, China, France, Japan or even Australia. Try something new for a change. So i don't blame whoever had the idea of RE5 in Africa. A nice, interesting, exciting change, but I would like to see someone of a different race being the hero in RE5. Maybe someone African-american. Why does the hero always have to be Caucasion?
Aaron Wynn @ May 21,2008
Um...there is a serious problem with this game whether you brainless people want to admit it or not. I've been a fan of the RE series since the 2nd installment and there has NEVER been a relevant black character included in the storyline...until now. Why do blacks have to be monsters just to have a crucial role in the script?? Those Japanese people don't EVER include black women in their games until now...and she's sick and infected and running rampant. WTF???!! Am I the only person who sees how OFF that is????
Sarah @ Apr 05,2008
This is not racist. Every other game made by resident evil depicts a the main character/s killing white people. How come you don't say this is racist? Color is just appearance, and this game would then be no different than GTA San Andreas.
Trevor Marion @ Mar 25,2008
No one seemed to care when in Resident Evil 4, a white man from the United States was slaughtering thousands of white, european zombies in Spain because it was understood that Spain is full of white Europeans and that in the story, the Spaniards where infected with a virus and needed to be neutralized. That is the same concept which is most likely taking place in Resident Evil 5. I hate politically correct people who are simply out there to show their asses and try to be a bane to art. You do not understand the game, therefore, do not play it!
Patrizio @ Mar 07,2008
well... considering
A: the game isnt intended for children...
B: its not zombies - Cpacom have allready stated that, they say the enemies are going to have the brutality of the zombie, and the intellegence of the ganados

and to wrap up: so... In resident evil: outbreak its perfectely fine to have a black cop killing of hordes of white ZOMBIES, but a white guy attacks a balck (insert enemy name when confirnmed here) ?

and on athother point: its done in SELF DEFENCE. do you want him to get his friggin head torn off?
Adam best @ Dec 30,2007
it probably never crossed the designers mind that people might take this game the wrong way but then again the majoirty of people all over this world know the history between black people and white people, obviously there would be a slight chance that racism would come up. why did he have to be in africa? why are they only black? didnt resident evil come from a disease from america made by americans? personally myself i would consider this to be racist because i dont see how resident evil has anything to do with africa game or no game, games has alot of influence on young people because most young people play these games. Its also promoting violence but then again alot of games are doing that nowadays.
Miriam @ Dec 16,2007
ok i don't think this game is racist at all, all the other games have been a white guy killing other white guys so whats wrong with a white guy killing Africans? Thats like saying gta san andreas is racist because your a black guy killing white people, like come on.
Brandon @ Nov 24,2007
Racism?

I dont think that would cross the game designer's mind, and i'm judging them, by the last 13 titles in its lineup.

The game designer has most centainly thought that a major outbreak would probably be in africa, due to the imense crouded areas, towns, cities, where goverment doesnt give a damm what happens with the public.
Such an outbreak would be disastrous.
How did the virus get to africa? Who imported it? Where did it originate? Etc..

That is called story line, that is put into gameplay... not Racism.

If we all take this as racism, better remember Blade, Nazi Germans, Slavery, etc...

Because then, its better for the film productions and game designers to stop delivering entertainments to the public, such as BLADE, CALL OF DUTY 1-2-3, HITLER: THE RISE OF EVIL, JUNGLE FEVER, some of it its even based in history.

If people talk about racism, at some point everyone in the entire world is at least a little racist... thats the truth.
It doesnt matter if you are Black, White, Asian, etc...
At some point, when you are walking, driving, running, talking with someone, you will think bad about someone that crossed your way that was different or even the same race.

But that doesnt mean that everything people do is racism.

Racism is part of life, thats why people who believe in God, know that God deliberately devided races around the world.

So live with it, its part of everyones lives.
Kwazy Ivan @ Sep 18,2007
I agree with what the person in Ray's comment said. For years the zombies in the Resident Evil franchise have been white. Isn't that racist? When is it the other races' turn?
Jerry @ Aug 09,2007
If people find this game to be racist, then I guess that they will find the UN peacekeepers going into Darfur to be racist too. The peacekeepers are mostly non-blacks and they will be killing/suppressing Africans.
Dan @ Aug 05,2007
om in the other ones there was whites being killed be a black but that dose not mean there rasist people see zombies and scary monsters not race why whould you even think that get the facts before you start saying things
mmp @ Aug 04,2007
What, does capcom have to BURN A CROSS and yell 'white power' before some of you privilegded young conservative white kids will admit to racism.

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and smells like a duck, 99 times out of 100 its a duck. if it LOOKS like racism, has all the familiar symptoms of racism (Im sure at least a few of you 'priviledged youth' have seen/read 'birth of a nation') then it probably IS racist.

But then again, what do I know. We all know white people killing black people is 'harmless fun' according to many supporters of the trailer.
p0ssum @ Aug 04,2007
the author of that blog at Black looks is the racist. Shes the one who pointed out the color of these peoples skin. If fact this is how she responded to someone who commented on her blog post.

This person said:

But they… ARE zombies. They aren’t “supposed” to be zombies.

If it’s any comfort, most of the zombies in the first 5 games (0-4) were white."

The author of the blog at Black Looks replied

"5. Kym Platt

R_N,

Yes… I am more comfortable with the zombies being white. In fact, ALL zombies should be white from this day forth."

Who's the racist here? YOU ARE KYM YOU IGNORAMUS!
Ray @ Aug 03,2007
Stupid, it is just a game and nothing more, why would some people create such hoax? Maybe for the mere publicity? Those so called conspiracy theorist better be lenient about such issues...
Careers at Baker @ Aug 02,2007
Shes obviously rascist herself because she makes a distinction between blacks and whites. As far as I am concerned the people in the trailer are all people, it just so happens that some of them are zombies.
