A newly developed software that will enable digitizing the records of defense land located outside cantonments was released in New Delhi, Monday, by Minister of State for Defense M.M. Pallam Raju.
Speaking on the occasion, Raju called upon officials responsible for defense estates to utilize the military land register (MLR) software for effective land management.
"With the fast-paced economy, the pressure on land has multiplied and it is now a precious commodity which requires judicious exploitation," he added.
The director general of defense estates, C.R. Mohapatra, pointed out that the task before his organization was voluminous since the defense ministry is the biggest landholder in the central government.
Since his organization was flooded with litigation over land held by it across the country, Mohapatra hoped the new software would come in handy in dispute resolution.
According to him, officials are being trained in the new software at the National Institute of Defense Estates Management (NIDEM).
Mohapatra said that the digitization project had been delayed by over three months and is likely to be completed by March next year.
The Directorate General of Defense Estates (DGDE) and the National Informatics Center (NIC) have jointly developed the MLR software.
It supplements the general land register (GLR) that maintains the records of defense land located within cantonments. The GLR, which Raju released in Nov 2006, is in various stages of implementation in all 62 cantonments spread across the country.
