The Chinese government has allegedly blocked Google's international web site in many major cities, owing to its strict internet censorship laws. However, the Chinese language version of Google which is heavily censored by the government, remains unaffected.
Internet users in China have reported that they have had no access to the international Google News, Google Mail and Google Search since May 31. A spokesperson for Google in Beijing said that the problem was under investigation but did not confirm that the site has been officially blocked.
This comes at a time when international human rights organizations are severely criticizing governmental censorship, especially in China. The Chinese government has been consistently blocking and censoring sensitive political content on the internet, which it finds ‘objectionable'. Major IT giants like Microsoft and Yahoo! and Google have also been accused of bowing down to censorship in China. Google has gone a step further by allowing its Chinese version to be completely taken over by the government, which clearly infringes on the Chinese citizens' right to freedom of speech and expression.
