ICM puts up a fight for .xxx
By: Priyanka Pradhan   |   May 20, 2006
The ICM registry, which claims to be a representative of the pornography industry in the U.S, has sued two departments of the US government. Last week, the Internet Corp. for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) had rejected the ICM Registry's plea for a suffix of .xxx to be provided for porn sites on the internet. Now, the Florida based ICM will sue the Department of Commerce and the Department of State on grounds that these departments had pressurized the ICANN to reject the domain name suffix.

Members of the ICM Registry claim to have seen documents revealing the fact that the US government “solicit[ed] foreign government intervention to achieve domestic political goals”. ICM officially announced, “We've seen about 100 pages of these documents, most of them emails sent between staff at the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, a branch of Commerce.”

The ICM Registry had argued that such a domain name suffix will clearly demarcate porn sites from others and so chances of accidentally ‘bumping into' these sites will be fewer. However, the plea was rejected due to lack of public support. Well, looks like another legal slug fest in the reckoning.
