MTNL has just announced the launch of India’s very first Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) next month. The technology will let Indian TV fanatics go ballistic with the option to select and watch movies and videos of their choice, rewind or fast-forward a movie and even access video-on-demand. Moreover, since IPTV will be using broadband services, its quality is slated to be better than cable TV and DTH broadcast.
Users will be required to use a set-top box, connected to the TV at one end and a broadband MTNL cable on the other end. The video on demand service is also interactive and personal, allowing viewers to watch film premiers and Hollywood films, which usually reach the Indian television with a lag of nine months. MTNL will be tying up with IOL Broadband and two content vendors to provide the IPTV facilities. So now through a single MTNL cable one will be able to use the net, watch TV and make telephone calls.
