RIAA sues Youtube users
By: Jayesh Mansukhani   |   Jun 15, 2006
It seems our friends over at the RIAA just cannot get enough. The latest BS to emerge from there are cease-and-desist letters to Youtube users who have dared to put up videos of things such as themselves dancing to music they haven't licensed.

Clearly an insanity plea no longer covers the RIAA's stupidity. From trying to orchestrate illegal takedowns in other countries a la The Pirate Bay to sending cease-and-desist letters to some poor user who has just recorded himself doing silly things to a song no one will even remember a week later. Youtube is all about expressing yourself in your own little corner on the net. Guess with Big Brother watching, soon even putting out harmless videos will become illegal.

I find it extremly gratifying to loathe the RIAA
and I'm a professional musician who's been in the industry for over
20 years.
These extortionist idiots are ruining our culture by holding
it hostage.
If the RIAA were to EVER sue some 13year old for using MY music to make their
videos with,I would sue them(RIAA).These scoundrels are a bunch of useless tools, doing the bidding of corporate shareholders
of the big-5,These big out of touch corporations are not even
run by people that give a shit about music, they are owned by alcohol companies like Seagrams,A REAl cultural tour de force.
Right..
The record industry is ruined. There is no musical diversity

anymore.I would feel very sorry for a younger artist nowadays
buying into the bullshit tactics of the majors by signing their life away.Fortunately, like a previous poster mentioned. The new generation is hopefully immune to their, consultations, they're quite aware of what they're going through...ch ch ch ch..
Oops! I'd better not sing the chorus! The RIAA might be monitoring and I can't afford the 150 bisquillon dollar lawsuit they would slap on me.
If they catch you singing in the shower too, watch out!
I hear that offence involves prison time!

JESSICA SIMPSON for everyone. Give me the cyanide capsule,it's
in my holster next to those 20year old 'pirated'VHS copies of movies
that they said would destroy the moviemaking industry back in the day.

Many of the recording industry artists don't even own copyrights to their "own" stuff...and are bound to their "Major" by concrete solid contract so they can be exploited and then put aside when they are getting out of fashion...
Dave @ Jun 23, 2006
Happy I am not living in the States...
The real losers are definitaly not the artists but those "Major" suckers that are stealing from the artists anyway giving them pennies on a 15 $ CD.
Now with the computers and home studios producing quality stuff those Corps are afraid to lose what they stole since the beginning of the so called industry.
Time to eliminate the suckers between the artist and the audience...
JS @ Jun 23, 2006
Can somebody tell me how many copyrights the RIAA owns? Don't bother, I know the answer: NONE. Not the first three notes of one copyrighted song. But they're the watch-dogs? They're the sleaziest, money-mad fucking bastards around. So who is giving them all this money and power?
Yeah, three guesses and the first two don't count! So they chase down kids who don't have shit for money to defend themselves.
And all they're doing is bounty hunting the ones they decided were "outlaws"? One fucking slimy bunch of twats they are!
George C. O. @ Jun 23, 2006
This is ridiculous!! I guess that means people can be sued for taking a CD they own, a boombox they own, and playing it for friends at a public school...or just anywhere out in the public. I mean the whole problem is because the music is being publicly broadcast through YouTube without licensing consent right?.... so that means it's illegal for me to play music out of my boombox outside out in the public??

RIAA...what a bunch of idiots. How in the hell and why in the hell should it be ILLEGAL for a dumbass to tape himself dancing to a song and then show it to other people on the internet. this is so freakin stupid. oh my god.

If good movies or CDs were produced it would stem the tide of illegal downloads. Why pay 14.95US for a CD having MAYBE one good song on it? Why pay more for a movie that the self serving newspaper rags puff up then the flick goes flat? Make better music and better movies.
IC @ Jun 21, 2006
It's too bad that these artists and recording companies don't put the same effort into their craft that Tool does. Everytime Tool puts out an album they insure that everybody will want to to actually get off their butts and go out and buy the CD. How? By not only making quality music but also by making the packaging a desired product in itself. They're the only band that does that anymore. In fact everything they do is about the experience of the music. Unfortunately everybody else just wants to vomit up something uninspired and try to suck out a few flavor of the week bucks. They deserve to be stolen from. After all it's what they do.

I agree with David. How will RIAA show that they have experienced ANY financial loss whatsoever as a result of YouTube users dancing to music composed and performed by third parties? I also agree with Cyberite, in that this brownshirt enforcement has caused the youth of today to have no respect whatsoever for this type of "Big Brother" fiscalization. Calling all music lovers to stop buying and restrict RIAA's income! What a waste of everyone's frickin' time!!!
Eliana Lobo @ Jun 20, 2006
The real point here is that the RIAA will have to show that they have experienced a real LOSS as a result of YouTube users dancing like idiots.

I fail to see how this is costing the RIAA any money. Nobody decides against purchasing a CD because they can stream one song off it in low quality on YouTube while watching someone bounce around to it.

You people are taking the food from the mouths of The Beatles, George Micheal, Micheal Jackson to name but a few.
How is Elton John supposed to survive with the theft of so much work. At one point he had to sell his old clothes.
Everyone should inform the RIAA of their intrntions to use any material and pay the fee. It's only fair. The RIAA Should do their bit to make it easy to pay, something they have neglected for a long time.
Dave @ Jun 19, 2006
Unfortunately the case is not so blatantly black and white as it may seem.

Artists should have the right to see to their art being used in a way in which they approve. The overwhelming majority of the instances in which sound recordings are used without permission are trivial, it is probably agreed by everyone with half a brain that a couple of girls dancing and singing their little hearts out to a particular song is relatively harmless, but what if that sound recording is being used as the background to some kind of activity with which the artist does not want to be associated with?

Buying a music recording is not the same as owning the recording. There are laws preventing the copy and free distribution of such recordings, and they're in place for artist protection rather than to piss off consumers, believe it or not.

I do however believe the RIAA have bigger fish to fry. Going after kids with crappy videos is not what this should be about. Honestly, who is going to bother bookmarking one of thse shitty videos just so they can continue to listen to the same track over?
mikezero @ Jun 19, 2006

I don't know how many times I have heard a song on a website and went out and bought it. Not a 99 cent single but the whole CD. That has not happened in the past year. Yes, we need to inform other buyers of what is going on and try to get a ban on music purchases. Maybe a email campaign. If we started emailing all of our contacts about a boycott maybe it might make a small impact.

Enishi @ Jun 19, 2006
The problem with the RIAA and this entire situation is that the majority of the public really doesn't hear/care about these stories. I'm a university student and if I mention the RIAA's latest attempt at suing someone most of my friends are in the dark about this, yet they know of all the goings on in local and national politics, pop culture etc. The other problem is that the RIAA has this national stance about combating piracy, and so naturally the uninformed masses assume the RIAA is doing good deeds and protecting artists against profit losses. If we really want the RIAA to be hit hard, everyone has to be properly informed and motivated about how this effects their lives (DRM's the plugging of the analog hole, satelite radio, ripping cd's etc.) They're alienating themselves yes, but only to the group of us who care enough to be properly informed(Musicians/Tech Hobbyists etc.) not to the average Joe, especially of the older generation who on average have little or no use for an ipod or any other medium effected by the RIAA's actions. Tell your friends, parents, co-workers, lobby your politicians. Disagreeing with them is all fine and dandy but just posting about your displeasure only gets this cause so far.
Antho @ Jun 18, 2006
So, if this goes on... they are ganna sue Google Video, The Movie Industry, and try to get 700 MILLION people arrested... I myself should say that if they are ganna try that, why not try to overthrow the presidency and be shot dead by the military while they are at it.

Seriously though, they are ganna go after France for making it legal to have free music. That will be their next goal.

I myself would probably be 1 of the 700 million people. I admit that I use music on videos, and my own video game mods. If anything, they should sue the makers of UT2004 and the makers of Audacity for being able to make songs useable within that game. They should Sue the Artists for making the music that is being freely put out. And most of all, they should Sue Bill Gates for creating the ways to make the ways to freely obtain music.

If a person wants to download something and put it on a video, it should not be illegal, especially because it doesn't do any harm whatso ever. The freaking thing actually helps promote the sales of CDs...

I used to buy a ton of music retail, as I used to DJ quite a lot. I spent literally thousands of dollars on music, but now, because of the monstrous stupidity of the RIAA, suing kids and grandmothers, blaming everyone but themselves for lagging sales numbers based on unrealistic projections, I buy no more. I won't buy another piece of music from a store, retail, online or otherwise and I'll make sure nobody I know ever does either. I support the artists by buying concert tickets to their shows. The RIAA and its employees need IQ checks, and a firm shove towards an unemployment line.
Me @ Jun 18, 2006
I can understand the RIAA's desire to stop music being illegally shared. But I don't see why they can't see the potential for free advertising. It's a shame that the entrepenuers have left bigger organizations, because if I saw someone playing around with my music or my invention without any effort from me, I'd be incredibly happy with myself. And yeah, this would have been forgotten in about a week.
