European alcohol and cigarettes in UK may soon be made duty free, if bought over the Internet. The EU Court of Justice is currently looking into the matter and will announce its decision on November 23. However, the EU treasury wants the court to reject the appeal because the move will mean lesser revenue in terms of reduced income tax.
The Wine and Spirits Trade Association said that UK-based retailers are struggling to compete on wine sales against EU nations such as France, where alcohol and tobacco duties are minimal. The new move to make online purchase of tobacco and alcohol products from UK duty free, may make things easier for UK retailers but will hit the EU treasury below the belt.
