ASUS Unveils Eee PC In India
By: Jayesh Mansukhani   |   Jan 29, 2008

Asus today unveiled its Eee PC 4G model in India. This ultralight laptop is a small, slim affair that's primarily targeted at schoolchildren, housewives, senior citizens, and teenagers – who enjoy simple computing and don’t require the full features of a conventional laptop.

Albert Tung, Managing Director, ASUS India, said, "The ASUS Eee PC is a revolution that has enhanced the computing lifestyle of technology users. It aims at enriching human life like all our other technology offerings. With computing demands as well as growing number of users, both young and old, the ASUS Eee PC provides users with a new mobile Internet experience like never before."

Francis Kao, Product Manager, ASUS India, said, "It is a matter of great pride for us to introduce the Eee PC for Indian users. The worldwide acceptance of this product is symbolic of its simplicity, robust build quality and user friendliness. Although it is primarily aimed at schoolchildren and teenagers, even other user groups have shown a lot of interest in this product."

The Eee PC is initially being introduced in the Mumbai market. It will be available at select major retailers and also through the company's network of channel partners, at an MRP of Rs 18,000. The first sale will commence at 5 pm on February 2 at select Croma outlets in Mumbai. The first 100 buyers will be entitled to an additional special gift.

For the Indian market, the ASUS Eee PC (normally available with a Linux interface) is being given a special Windows Starter Edition-based GUI. This is being in done in conjunction with Microsoft. While not too many details are available at the moment, we can look forward to seeing this product soon.

18000 is too much for this configuration. I would be interested to buy one only if the price is around 12000.

Rajiv, No you cannot use this laptop for that purpose since the processor is very slow, its a Celeron 900Mhz UNDERCLOCKED to 650Mhz due to motherboard compatibility issues.

I just saw the EEE yesterday, it is indeed a kinky little toy I would love to get my hands on! But not at this price! In US, the same model is available for 12,000! I don't know why on earth the price difference has to be there.
Flaws: Very slow processor. DO NOT FORGET the processor is UNDERCLOCKED - it is actually a Celeron 900Mhz which has been underclocked to 650Mhz due to incompatibility with the motherboard. No optical drive also poses a problem.

Windows XP can be installed on the laptop but on core models, Xandros or Ubuntu comes preinstalled.

Bottom Line: Its a great laptop for students who are always on the move or for business related ventures where a handy tool is there at your disposal. Think of it as a more powerful PDA.

Can we use this laptop to make architectural / graphical presentations to customers? What are the add-ons that we would need to provide/upgrade for the same.
Rajiv @ Feb 12, 2008
Its still expensive. The cost should have been about 15K

10gb solid state hard-drive, 11" screen @ 12-13k......... that's what - WE THE PEOPLE WANT.

It is the nano of laptops with the potential to revolutionize the indian market. A cheap UMPC for all. Good going Asus.

P.S. - Do something about drive space and the screen in your next release.

By Selling @ Rs 18000/-, ASUS is subsidising $200 market and making their profit.
Bharatiya @ Jan 31, 2008
I fully agree with Santosh Z on price part.
Jignesh @ Jan 31, 2008
I saw it. It's very small. And very expansive here, in Romania. 1200 lei (about 470 $). A Second-henad laptop with Windows XP license is about 1300 lei, and a new one, with Linux, start at 1400 lei. So... It's an expansive toy for kids.
Florin @ Jan 31, 2008
I read somewhere that Asus is launching Eee PC, It's $200 Laptop. If that is true, I feel 18,000 Rs. is too much for this. It should be 8,000-10,000 Rs.
Santosh Z. @ Jan 31, 2008
Let's wait for the 9 inch screen model. That would be a dream come true for all of us who hate lugging that 3 kg laptop
Sachin @ Jan 30, 2008
I think i will wait for the 8G model, 4G isn't enough. As well as, it only available in Mumbai, so can't buy now.
