From the looks of Red Hat's acquisition of JBoss it looks we might be now entering an era of consolidation in the Open Source market space. It looks like Oracle is considering developing its own Linux distribution in an effort to create a complete software package under one roof, Larry Ellison, chief executive, Oracle, has been quoted as saying.
"I would like to have a complete stack," he said. "We are missing an operating system. You could argue that it makes a lot of sense for us to look at distributing and supporting Linux."
This would be a great move, as an Oracle Linux distribution would allow the company to integrate and test its database, middleware and enterprise applications. Oracle has been steadily increasing its software portfolio in recent years. Its software services now include a plethora of products that span middleware such as an application service, databases and enterprise software including customer relationship management and enterprise resource planning.
Keeping all this in mind Oracle has also looked into acquiring Novell, maker of the SuSE Linux distribution. Suse has a well-known Linux distro that enjoys popularity as a tightly integrated package with timely updates. Its acquisition could be strategic to Oracle.
