When every PC vendor was venturing into AMD territory, Dell stuck with Intel. This was at a time when AMD was going hammer and tongs with its socket 939 series of processors. Now when Intel is back with a bang with its Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme series of processors, Dell announces the launch of its AMD based desktops and servers. Sounds funny? Ditto! Nevertheless, it will be sweet consolation for AMD, especially at a time when its newly introduced socket AM2 based processors are being belted left, right and center by Intels Core 2 Duo series of processors, popularly known as Conroe.
Dell will be incorporating AMD processors in their Dimension desktop computers next month and will introduce a two-socket and multi-processor server using AMD Opteron processors by the end of the year. Dimension is the lower priced, starting range of Desktop Computers from Dell. Although Dell hasn't specified what will go into the Dimension family, speculation has been that Sempron and Athlon 64 X2 processors will be used. All this pretty much falls into place considering AMDs recent price cuts.
Finally! Dell without Intel
