India to Get iPhone 3G on August 18

So after much digging, we've got information on the official date for the India launch of the iPhone 3G.

Vodafone will launch the iPhone 3G first on the 18th of August. Pricing and other essentials are still unknown. But worry not, we at Tech2 will keep you posted. You'll know as soon as we do.

I was checking with Vodafone customer support just a while back regarding the pricing. He dint spell out any info but did mention that it might be between 12k-13k with 2 year contract.

Moreover even u r saying the same coz 16k without tax means 18.4 k with import tax plus activation charges of almost 600rs and handling charges of 1.5k makes it nearly 21k.

Well i went to wega centre here in pune. Its the head of airtel for maharashtra and goa circle. I talked to a superior official who is also my dad's friend(cant give his name) and he told me that no contract as of yet and the package would 100% cost more than 20k.
Singtel(which actually is airtel) in singapore is giving iphone 3g on 22nd for US 350$.

what crap... how is this iBone worth anything like this kind of money? whether it costs 12 or 24k, it's still worthless. Let's see.. No Bluetooth sync, no A2DP for stereo BT phones, no BT file transfer, no clipboard cut-paste functionality. Absolutely crappy camera with no video and no flash.

I'll stick with my K850i, thanks.

Im currently using the Iphone 8GB Black. And im planning on selling it for Rs 21,000 when i come to Mumbai on the 29th August '08. I got it from my trip to the US this May. Im sure that when the phone launches in India by Airtel or Vodafone it will not cost less than Rs 25000 for the 8GB and approx Rs 32000 for the 16GB.
I was expecting the price of the HTC Touch which was bieng sold last year by Airtel to be less the same way we are expecting the launch of the Iphone.. However, Airtel did no discount on the price and sold the HTC Touch at its MRP of Rs 19,500... So contact me on valentinoferrao@gmail.com if your interested in buying the Iphone from me..!!!

@Rachit - the cost given by fonearena is based on their speculation. Other sites have relied on their insiders and all are saying the same thing that airtel will launch iphone 3g at 12,500/- INR and that only 8GB will be available. Moreover steve jobs declared that iphone 3g will be available for 199$ all over the world, so obviously he can't neglect worlds second largest market. One of the posts below in this section also confirmed vodafone price as 13k.

The 8GB model would cost around Rs.15960 and the 16GB model would cost around Rs.19960, both available only on exclusive 2 year contract with Vodafone.

@Rachit-There's a correction rachit. Its like the sourcing price of iphone is rs.10,000 and $250 is commitment cost over 2 years which airtel will be giving to apple. But the same site claims that its source is pretty sure that airtel has kept the price of iphone 3g at 12,500rs. The site is onlygizmos.

I was told that the price details will be out by this week. But its a speculation. I hope they even provide 16 GB model also. Some sites say only 8 GB will be available. One site claims that airtel has kept the handset cost as 10,000/- INR and 2500/- INR as the commitment charge for 24 months, which makes the handset actually cost 12,500/- INR excluding monthly rental.

Customer Care Has no info on the pricing as of now but they saiid it would be released atleast a week before the official launch date so i dont think we will hear anything before 15th August..Im guessing that will be the date of the All India Campaign..but that's just a guess..

Next time a girl said that the only CONFIRMATION they have is that the launch is in LAST WEEK of august. Mr. Cook of Apple revealed the next launch date as 22nd. In short, TECH 2 is a shameless site giving wrong info. Do one thing rachit, call the customer care n try to dig out more on this n let me know. C ya.

@mack pau-Well u cant do a direct conversion of dollars to INR coz calling rates in US and india are very different. Its jus 2-3 cents max in india compared to 20 cents in US. The IPHONE 3G IS FOR 12K TO 13K IN INDIA.

Are u Kidding man, Apple iPhone on such a throw away price? In States it cost $199 and that too on two years contract, here Airtel and Vodafone wont get any contract signed, so how can that be so cheap. Afterall, who will bear the export and service. After doing calculation, it wont stop near 22,000 bucks.... (it could be more)

10k profit per iPhone over 2 years according to your calculations(Service tax goes to government). Thats hardly any profit for such a high-end gadget. Anyways, I guess we should stop our discussion here as both of us are right in a way. My initial post was just to know which site was it where you read the iPhone pricing by vodafone and airtel. @PAT ,my friend, i had a simple point to say that airtel and vodafone are both ready to subsidise the iphone despite the prevoius denial by airtel. so if 16.5 k is the buying price,airtel and vodafone can do it upto 12 and 13k to subsidise and make a contract which is acceptable to both customers and the retailers.
by this strategy,they are goin to make a lot of customers under their belt n ultimately a 14K profit per iphone as per my calculation.
they wont mind such a profit.

@hrishikesh: If you are gonna calculate that ways, iPhone costs 80k in INR in US (199$ + 70$ * 24 Months)! Thats not the point I was making. I was saying that if the iPhone will be available for 16.5 (as you said it will), it will definitely cross 1k per month for rentals. If its going to be 13k, the rent would be even more. 399 and 699 rent per month for a 13k or 16.5k iPhone is not possible.

hello there..here's the calculation.
a)base price 12990/-
monthly rental 699/-
total months 18
b)hence, total rental cost = 699x18= 12582/-
c)activation charges 799/- (appr.)
total cost over 18 months = a + b +c = 26371/-
d) VAT (12.5%) = 3296/-
HENCE the total cost 0f IPHONE 3G goes to = a+b+c+d
= 29667/-
thats obviously above 16.5k....
dont forget pat that the phone will come with a contract and though its buying price is 399$ for 8 GB its being sold for 199$ in usa due to contract system.

Dont forget the buying price of iPhone for airtel and vodafone is nearly 16.5k! So if the iPhone is indeed going to abe available for 16k odd (which I doubt), then the plans would start from atleast 1k+ per month. I am expecting it to be around 20-22k with 700 per month rent!

but one site mentions vodafone price tag as 16990/- with a monthly rental of 399/- for 18 months..
whereas airtel price tag is 11990/- or 12490- with a monthly rental of 699/- for 18 months with unlimited edge connection in it..
hope vodafone also offers the same..

It's amazing how people find the most trivial of reasons to trash the iPhone as over hyped. 'Web browser does not support flash' - so don't buy the iPhone?! It's about the overall user experience and redefining the mobile. I use the iPod Touch and trust me web browsing is fantastic. It beats the pants off any other phone - an I have used the N series, E series etc. And why do we want the iPhone to do everything from making coffee, reading minds, picking nose, scratching back and yet be priced at 10,000?

iPhone 3G is changing the way world looks at information sharing via internet. Within 4 years from now, laptops will be replaced by devices like iPhone. So please dont under estimate the power of this awesome device. iPhone is as big an invention as internet itself in many ways.

I would bet on iPhone 3G being price at Rs.28000 for 8gig and 31000 for 16gig. I dream of -20k at the same time. Lets wait till 18th of aug.

1. u can't set ur mp3 songs as ringtones..
2. u can't edit or create documents like excel,powerpoint,pdf...
(do u still think its good for office goers)

4. pls get GPRS activated worth Rs. 899..to use GPS or EDGE/GPRS
5. how many apple service centres do u know about in New Delhi.
6. anything goes wrong with the battery... bye bye iPhone..Hello service centre for min 2 working days...

8GB - Priced @ 18,000 aprrox.

to be launched by august end or September 1 week ....official carriers may do little more fuss than wht they r doing rite now.....

The HTC Touch Diamond is 27500/- officially the last time i checked. Also, unsubsidized iPhone is around 580 dollars in USA.

I don't think it's gonna come in for 15k. .. . atleast not an unlocked version.

And, will india really accept "network locked" handsets, or "contracts" ? I don't really think so.

There are surely a lot of people willing to pay 20 - 30 K for this phone officially, simply for the way it looks, and it's "tashan" value.

It's gonna be an interesting 2 months :)

Cost is inturn a concern for indian market. In us it sells for 200$ which means approximately about 8500 Rupees. But in no way we are going to get it here. sure. We'll have to pay at least 16k for the 8gb variant and about 20k for the high-end. If more operators are into this paradgim, may be the prices will get lowered. the thing of less concern is that htc is into the market with htc diamond, a cute clone of the iphone, packed with more features. but it is proced at about 17-18k i think.. any ways lets hope for the best.

Hey, I guess all the worries regarding SMS forwarding and Video recording can be kept aside because, the different third party applications for the Iphone that are all over the Internet will bring those features to life. They will work just fine with no issues on the Iphone. Believe me.
The only worry will be the FM Radio as there is no hardware at all supporting it. But still it is a great phone. Lets see at what price they launch the Iphone. Then the real movie will begin. Picture abhi baki hai mere dost.

Its useful if you have good highspeed internet with unlimited plan on your phone. I am using Airtel Edge -- Who says edge is fast? I get 4 kbps or 10kbps. So, wait till they upgrade infrastructure.

i think that iphone is much hyped but still it will sell like hot cakes considering the anticipation regardiing price etc.

i am myself waiting for its release..........and hope it will be within the reach of the common man....if apple at all wants to increase its profits and its market share in Nokia dominated market.

as great a device it may be, it's so so damn common. it almost looks cheap beacause every other person has one. I have the first iphone and it is amazing, but im not sure i want the new one anymore. i'd much rather go for a blackberry now - much better mail support (tho i'm yet to see for myself the mail/business prowess of the 2.0 firmware)
