HD DVD Might Knock Out Blu-ray
By: Siddharth Bhatia   |   Sep 28, 2007

Forrester research has come up with a report claiming that HD DVD might beat Blu-ray. This is news for everyone in the world, though it's vital to read between the lines. The publication says that the two camps are "fighting what seems to be a war of attrition for consumers’ hearts and minds", but concludes that Blu-ray makers need to cut prices dramatically:

"Blu-ray needs to offer a viable hardware model at the 250 dollar price point by Christmas 2007. The camp must also stave off further studio defections, and employ more aggressive promotional tactics to counter HD DVD’s recent momentum." If the camp can’t deliver on this it risks opening up the format to a "possible upset defeat at the hands of HD DVD".

Exclusive deals of HD DVD with Paramount and Dreamworks will definitely push their champion through a few rounds. Dreamworks has announced that the HD DVD of Shrek III will become available on November 13 (in the UK).

Unique extras will include a PIP storyboard reel that branches to lost scenes and three web-enabled downloads, including Shrek’s Trivia Track, a World of Shrek movie guide, and Donkey’s Digital Coloring Book.

Such advanced functionality is not yet possible on the Blu-ray platform, giving credence to Dreamworks' assertion that creative potential was a key consideration in the decision to back Blu-ray.

But are the Forrester dudes forgetting something? Millions of people have Blu-ray in their house, in the form of the PS3. So thats a headstart, rather a full-body start.

Then of course the 150-something million deal struck by the HD DVD camp can be easily re-struck between other big studios and the Blu-ray boys. So the Red vs Blue battle goes on...

I am AMAZED with my new PS3. The blu ray movies look fantastic on my 73 inch HDTV. I have it hooked up to my wireless network and it streams photos and videos from my server, and games look and play great.

I also am betting that the high computer capabilty of the PS3 will allow for upgrades that will allow things like PIP, etc., in the future.

All these guys who are saying that Blu-ray is leading because of the PS3 need to remember one thing. PS3 sales are still below that of Xbox 360 sales. You can get an Xbox 360 and a HD DVD player for less than you can purchase a PS3. The fact of the matter is that HD DVD is simply more economically feasible for most of the consumers who are ready to take the plunge in HD movie viewing. The majority of the people who want HD DVD or Blu-ray players are middle class who can't justify spending more that a few hundred bucks on a set up. I have a HD DVD player for xbox 360 that works fine with my TV. I bought it on ebay for $118. As far as renting the movies, yes, Blockbuster has blu-ray, but Netflix has HD DVD..... Go HD DVD!

The only plus of Blu-Ray is it can store 10GB of Data more per layer than HD-DVD. Max Capacity of dual layer blu-ray is 50GB compared to 30GB of dual layer HD-DVD. That's it folks. They both produce the same picture and sound quality. The high price of blu-Ray is not worth it for just a bit of extra disc storage. 30GB is more than enough space to hold hi-def film content. Sorry Blu-Ray.

I got an HDDVD player because the price was right. I would not consider getting a BlueRay player until a standalone is near $200.

HD DVD would be the future and beijing olympics and christmas 2007/2008 would prove it
Superior sound ,Superior graphics and superoir interactivity over BR with significantly lowered price for the consumer

HD DVD will win
Just a matter of time/public pricing
No Doubts about that.

There is no Blu-ray exodus, Paramount signed an 18 month deal with HD-DVD, after which they are free to do whatever they want. It is true that not everybody knows about the Blu-ray player in the PS3, but most people do and the PS3 is doing it's job: Saving Blu-ray and in 2 years, the battle will begin to come to an end...

It's a tiny highdef movie market right now and the PS3 has simply failed to move enough BD movies.
HD DVD will continue to grow as prices fall ever lower to a point where effectively all DVD players just happen to also be good HD DVD players and all a much the sameprices as DVD players are now.

HD DVD offers the most available, exclusive and potential movie content and the lowest prices with a fully functioning spec.

It will win out (against all the odds and predictions); the PS3 simply cannot win the much bigger a/v market.

I own a PS3 and use it exclusively for Blu-ray playback so I don't know what you're talking about. This is a moronic, misleading headline. Blockbuster stores chose Blu-ray as their exclusive HD format but they fail to mention that. I don't care if HD-DVD drives are free. If Blu-ray media continues to outsell and outrent HD-DVD media it won't matter and Universal and Dreamworks will be forced by economics to come back to Blu-ray.

Not many use the PS3 as a blu-ray player. Not many know that the PS3 has a blu-ray player. In fact only 20% of people have even heard of heard of blu-ray and that's jus the HDTV crowd i'm talking about.Sony is miserably failing at this.Lair didn't do any good,There are not much exclusives coming their way until MGS4..
