Samsung Launches Solar Powered Handset in India
By: Shayne Rana   |   Jun 10, 2009

Samsung India has just announced the global launch of their first solar-powered mobile phone, the “Solar Guru” (Guru E1107) in the Indian market. The new handset enables its users to charge the battery anywhere via sunlight.

Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Minister for New and Renewable Energy and J. S. Shin, President and CEO, Samsung South West Asia HQ launched the phone at a ceremony organized by the company at its manufacturing complex at Noida. “The Solar Guru has been developed keeping in mind the needs of Indian consumers, especially customers residing in areas where the electric supply is unstable, so that the consumers can rely on solar charging to remain connected.” states and J. S. Shin, President & CEO, Samsung South West Asia Headquarters. The Solar Guru represents the Company’s efforts to strengthen its leadership in the solar panel mobile market.

With an extended solar-powered battery, the Samsung Solar Guru solves the problem of unavailable or unstable electric supply, particularly in far flung areas. The phone has the capacity to provide around 5-10 minutes of talk time with one hour of solar charging (Measured when the phone is turned-off under the sun light of 80,000 Lux. Results can be different depending on circumstances). Moreover, the solar panel charging allows its users to save money and energy consumption on traditional electrical charging.

“With Samsung’s cutting edge technology and consumer-oriented strategy, I believe the Solar Guru is the perfect fit for the Indian consumer – not only because it is solar powered, but because it has a host of customized features , especially developed keeping in mind the needs of Indian consumers” said Sunil Dutt, Country Head , Samsung Mobile Division.

The Samsung Solar Guru comes in a compact design with features such as an FM radio, MP3 ring tones, embedded games and a powerful torch light. For consumer safety, the phone offers Mobile Tracker, which automatically alerts when the SIM card is changed or sends out an SOS message in an emergency. The Solar Guru provides “Mobile prayer”, a specialized feature for different religions that includes religious prayers and wall papers.

The Samsung Solar Guru (Samsung Guru 1107) is priced at Rs. 2799. Following its introduction in India, the Solar Guru will be launched in various markets including Europe, Southeast Asia, Southwest Asia, and Latin America in June 2009.

he mobiles need not have to be exposed to direct sunlight for charging. The mobile gets charged while you carry ur cell phone under normal intensity. Because the cells used are thin film technology but not the (Silicon) crystal cells.

bafna n @ Jun 11, 2009
just seems to be a marketing gimmick guys..always its better get along a charged standby battery for the handset..than keeping it under the sun for an hr in case of emergency..!!!

still this is the way to go handset makers... keep it up
ak @ Jun 11, 2009
that's good i think samsung is going to be the top mobile selling company in few days.
ashish @ Jun 11, 2009
The phone manufacturers recommend that mobiles should not be kept under direct sun. Then how come Samsung is allowing this since solar panels on the backside will also mean that mobile has to kept in direct sunlight.
Prashant @ Jun 11, 2009
I thought Samsung Earth was the first Solar Powered mobile from Samsung.

Still, I like the concept of solar charging.
bhargav sai @ Jun 11, 2009

I wish all our gadgets could be run on solar power, we could put lesser pressure on this fragile ecosystem of ours. I would love to have a solar powered handset, something which I always looked forward to seeing the rising electricity bills.

Idea is good. But, 5-10 minutes of talk time with 1 hour of solar charging doesn't makes any sense. Helpful only when one needs to make an emergency call with empty battery.

This idea might work in rural areas, especially in villages where there's no electricity. But, then also, there won't be mobile networks in such regions.

I'm getting more n more confused.
Amandeep Singh @ Jun 10, 2009
the solar panel must be of bad quality because an hours charge will only give u 5-10 mins of talktime samsing just wants to sell its phone i doubt whether even half the solar panel is real
asd @ Jun 10, 2009
how to buy this m-phone ?
vivaswan.j.k @ Jun 10, 2009
Its not practical... You dont expect to bake your phone in the sun for an hour or two to get just 10 minutes of talk time.
Huzefa Penwala @ Jun 10, 2009
"5-10 minutes of talk time with one hour of solar charging " .They must be out of their mind. Its just a ploy to sell useless phones differently. you need to charge this phone 6 hrs for 1 hr of talk time and you have to charge it during the day (obvious) and turned off (to get 5-6 min per hr).
Zz @ Jun 10, 2009
Now this is why samsung is growing stronger and stronger everyday
Zz @ Jun 10, 2009
