By: Priyanka Pradhan   |   Aug 27, 2006
According to environment NGO, Greenpeace, which launched the 'Guide to Greener Electronics' yesterday, Nokia and Dell share the top honors as the greenest manufacturing companies. The report names Nokia as a leader in eliminating toxic chemicals by making all new models of mobiles, free of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) and Brominated Flame Retardants (BFRs) from the start of 2007. Dell is also named for setting high targets for eliminating these harmful substances from their products. HP obtained the third position, followed by Sony Ericsson, Samsung, Sony, LG Electronics, Panasonic, Toshiba , Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Apple, Acer and Motorola. Lenovo, however, ranked last and needs to do better overall, in most categories.

Greenpeace has ranked these companies on broad categories of Chemicals policy and practice, Policy and practice on taking back discarded electronic products (ewaste) and recycling, chemicals policy based on the Precautionary Principle, Chemicals Management Timeline for phasing out all use of vinyl plastic (PVC) and use of Brominated Flame Retardants (BFRs) in addition to those banned by European Union's or Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS).

While companies are rated solely on information publicly available on their global websites, penalty points will be deducted from overall scores if Greenpeace finds a company lying, practicing double standards or other corporate misconduct.
