The laptop market has grown and matured over the last several years, and demand has built up steadily. Manufacturers have taken every measure to ensure they offer the largest possible range for virtually any kind of consumer. Now while consumer choice is always a good thing, it’s a different matter when the choice becomes just too bewildering and confusing for the average human being.

Permit me to explain. I feel there's just too much choice available now and not enough clear differentiation in products based on actual performance. For example, take Sony’s VAIO range of laptops. This year alone the company introduced over 50 new models with near identical specs and different covers – from 'nature themes' to dedications to obscure artists that no one has heard of.

The same trend can be observed in products from Lenovo, Dell and HP – Dell with its Inspiron range, Lenovo with the 3000 range, and HP with its 6x/9x range of machines.

With that rant out of the way, let’s examine the product in hand – the Lenovo 3000 Y410 (quite a mouthful, eh?) The company says this is a multimedia powerhouse. Is this true or does the 3000 Y410 fall into the same quagmire as others with tall claims and no show? Let’s find out.

Dont buy any of the Lenovo laptops.. I hate it.. the sound quality is real pathetic and most important defect which sucks me is that the integrated webcam and bluetooth of my Lenovo 3000 Y410 model doesnt work.. I hate it...and its a shame that Lenovo has not come up with a solution by now for this world wide known issues.. Shame on you lenovo!!
LenovoVictim @ Apr 03,2008
it has a subwoofer and dolby digital home theatre sound system, but despite this even at the maximum volume level, the sound quality is poor.No theatre like experience.Pathethic Sound system.Either speaker quality is poor or Lenovo is fooling its customers. The dolby digital tag is only for name sake.
saikat bhattacharjee @ Mar 17,2008
sound system is very poor. no bass at all.and though dual cor e it sould have been at least 1.7 GHrz
dr.anishim @ Mar 15,2008

Anindo Chatterjee @ Mar 14,2008
all prospective buyers please dont fall for the dolby sound. i bought this one thinking of the sound system ,, but this one is very poor on quality and volume levels.tried latest drivers from lenovo but no improvement. supoort guys at lenovo dont have a clue and they suggested that if it is an s/w issue i will have to pay them for the rectification.i bought this one with preinstalled and it should have been tested before roll-out buy the gereat techs at lenovo.
poor support, poor sound ,,,,, my sincere advise to all guys looking for brand ibm perfomance from lenovo to stay away from thislenovo version.
this y410 performed verse than my current presario1700 at the sound front.
you can try finding any soulution for lenovo laptop problems and will realise how difficult it is. rgds

This is not a comment but rather a query? I am looking for Y410 laptop model with 2GB RAM. Dealer says it is upgradeable to 4GB . Now my doubt is that will Y410 really support 4GB efficiently... Please mail me your findings on this

How can you operate the webcam? I bought this laptop (y410) and I can't operate the webcam.. I think this laptop is good enough for students like me. The features are good also.. It's just a little too big compared to other laptops.. Anyway, for it's price, i think I got a pretty good deal.. Oh and I love the veriface. So cool!

The after sales service by Lenovo is very very bad. I have been writing for the last one month to replace the damaged TFT display of Lenovo laptop during warranty period, but so far no action has been taken. It is better that the service engineer of Trivandrum unit is replaced by some person who can understand the very element of physical damage and normal defects.

Ok - I have to say - the best thing about this notebook is the screen! It also does not overheat! The keyboard and touch pad are nice and sturdy. In the us model we do not have the bluetooth added - its only an option, same goes for IR. The weight is average - the design is mediore. It has dolby digital sound which is cool. Lacks the shock mounted hardrive from its counterpart (thinkpad) lacks the rolecage, and drainage hole, and fingerprint verification also. for the price its ok but do not expect a thinkpad or you will be disappointed.
matt @ Dec 05,2007
i got this laptop for a good price when compared to the competitors in the market. i liked the robust design, keyboard, Onekey recovery option. The device doesn't get heated up even if you run for hrs. The performance is very good for a Core 2 Duo processor. The only con which i could think of is the battery, it only gives 2 hrs of life when multimedia is played.
hydguy @ Dec 02,2007
PLEASE SEND ME THE DETAILS OF YOUR 42Q,48Q,46Q MODELS. ALSO 3000 Y410 IS A PREFERABLE MODEL.
RAUSHAN ABHIJEET @ Dec 02,2007
I have used lenovo y series and compaq v3000 series laptop. As far as performance is considered, it is not in the hands of lenovo or compaq, its in the processors and chipsets they are using. Lenovo is a little highly priced, when compared to compaq or in class brands. But for that price they are giving 30% more batt backup than the counterparts, namely compaq. And batt is one of the costliest part in laptops now. As said in the review, lenovo's plastic is stronger than compaq's, but the design is bulky. And the external silver finish goes off quickly, even if you take care while handling. Thermal design is far better than compaq, which increases the life of electronic part exponentially. Compaq has poor thermal design. But compaq is value for money more at shaheen97@gmail.com

Nadeem..I would second your opinion with no second thought.
The laptop is priced as if it is a multimedia powerhouse which it is not, certainly....(though it is being advertized as one)
Also, Lenovo as a brand is not at all up to the mark as the big ,good old IBM. Build of Lenovo laptops is just not good enough. A one month old laptop starts creaking and the colour goes on to fade.. A certainly better choice would be HP or Dell or Vaio....
Arpit @ Nov 26,2007
U guys wrong.
i can get a AMD based tablet pc for same price with original windows vista home premium with ATI x1300 mobile GPU.
or for 64k core 2 duo based tablet pc.
this laptop is not good not even for its price .. its too high..
and lenovo is not better.. they spoiled the IBM brand after getting there laptop devision.. they really spoiled IBM,,
DELL and HP are better then lenovo this days.
at same price i can get better deal than this
