A Multimedia PC Under Rs 35,000
By: Jayesh Mansukhani   |   Oct 16, 2007

In a recent feature, we had built a budget machine that offered very good performance at Rs 20,000. The configuration was well-received, and generated a lot of positive and negative feedback from readers. One common complaint was about the use of an AMD dual-core setup. More than quite a few of you wrote in to stay that the system should have been built on Intel’s dual-core processor system.

The reason we did not use an Intel processor in the earlier roundup was simple. When we consider a particular platform to build our base on, we check everything out. In that price bracket the AMD 690G/ dual-core setup offered better VFM than the Intel C2D/G946Gz combination. There was also quite a large difference in the costs involved and this further tilted things in favor of AMD.

However, when we began to look at our next price bracket, we were a bit stumped. The multitude of choices made picking an ideal system quite difficult. After a lot of chopping and changing specifications, we decided to extend our budget by Rs 5,000 and build a machine that would not only serve as an excellent multimedia affair, but actually allow some basic gaming.

Please note that in some places peripherals have remained unchanged from previous articles. In such cases we do not change the relevant text, and carry it forward.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E4400

Intel has over the last year or so been growing from strength to strength. Not only has it reconquered the performance bracket with the C2D processors, it's started introducing powerful budget processors that offer exceptional VFM.

One such product is the Intel C2D E4400. It clocks in at 2 GHz and comes with 2 MB L2 cache. At its price point it has no competitors and offers exceptionally powerful performance. When you factor in that it's highly overclockable, this processor is a natural choice for our rig.

Motherboard: XFX 650i Ultra

Over the last couple of years, XFX has developed a very good reputation for its graphic cards and its exceptional after sales service. The company recently branched off into motherboards, with the introduction of Nvidia's 680 and 650 chipsets.

As its name suggests, the board we've chosen is based on the 650i Ultra chipset, which has native support for the 1333 MHz FSB. The board lacks onboard graphics, but does offer a single PCIe 16x slot, 1 PCIe x1 slot, 8 USB slots, 3 PCI slots, and 4 SATA 2 (3.0 GB) slots.

RAM: Kingston DDR2 667 MHz

RAM prices have recently been going south and it's time to take advantage of this. 1 GB of system memory is absolutely vital nowadays with the increased size and requirements of software. Kingston really needs no introduction. The company has been making quality RAM sticks for a long time. Now available with a 5-year warranty, it’s the perfect product for our machine.

every day I think that next year I ll get a gaming pc for 35,000. But even after years, a gaming pc costs 50,000.
Also I think that this spec is not a multimedia computer .this is definitely a high end system, that gamers craved for a year ago. Just buy some games released 2 years ago and enjoy. If you buy some games now.dont care.Buy a new multimedia computer after 5 years and enjoy then.

Can anyone suggest any good motherboard with onboard
graphics instead of this motherboard. I am not a hardcore gamer
& will like to upgrade later.
rajib @ Oct 23, 2007
Hi this is ankit
i was very impressed the config u have taken for this desktop
i just had a query that can we use the amd processor on the motherboard you specified here
because i would prefer amd on intel my use will b more of games n surfing net
plz answer my query for the same
ankit @ Oct 19, 2007
Hey add 1000 bucks more and get a 8600 GT . 8500 GT doesn't performs well in gaming.
yash @ Oct 17, 2007
Good configuration.
But if u need peace of mind, forget the given graphics card and go for good intel original mobo or go for a better graphics card. Now a days Intel mobos have good GMA, including vista aero support!
Also go for VA1912wb LCD, its a better choice.
Azhar @ Oct 17, 2007
Excellent config for a intel lover and not for somebody who wants best value for their money . the core 2 duo 4400 cant reach the performance of Athlon X2 4800 which is ruppes 200 less.
in gaming the X2 4800 is 15 % faster than C2D 4400 and in the same league of C2D 6750 which costs Rs 8200.
if you don't bother about performance and all that matters for you is the shiny intel logo go for it .

@vijay

The price on the ATP3 was wrong. Our normally reliable dealer had sent across the wrong price. Article has been updated accordingly to reflect the changed product.
jayesh @ Oct 17, 2007
I agree with Vijay... ATP3 isn't available for anything around the quoted price. If available, I'd blindly buy it for 1900 bucks!
Raunak Mehta @ Oct 17, 2007
Well the configuration is right , but graphics card and , Power supply is not up to date , and speaker must be 5.1 channel instead of 2.1

Overall it is good , Good works Tech2.com
Saurabh Jain @ Oct 17, 2007
Pray where r U able to get Altec Lansing ATP3 for Rs. 1900 ?- tell please I need one very badly! Every computer shopping site is quoting 2.7 to 2.9k Hope U have not interpolated the price of Creative Inspire 2.1 !!
Secondly in order to take the price to a fixed amount like 35k in this instant- I do not think an important thing like a Power Supply in a Desktop should be compromised. To run an expensive setup like this on a generic power supply (junk costing about Rs. 350 wholesale) will be exposing the comp. to risk of spikes and voltage fluctuations. This tendency in all Indian sites must be discouraged. I think a set up costing 35k deserves a Power supply costing Rs. 1300- like a VIP/Powersafe 400 W.
vijay @ Oct 17, 2007
Kudos to tech2 again for featuring this article on the site. Was waiting for a long time. The Trilogy seems complete. Awesome!!!!!!
Subhash @ Oct 17, 2007
Many many thanks for a reasonable priced configuration with better performance in mind;this is what I was waiting for.Good work done.
A S RAJAN @ Oct 16, 2007
a very good one indeed.. will help many
Sridar @ Oct 16, 2007
sorry i meant 17" CRT screen
sam @ Oct 16, 2007
instead we can go for 17 " TFT screen and save 4 grands and get a much better Graphics card that can really last us for 1-2 years of basic computer gaming... 8500 GT doesnt stand anywhere...
sam @ Oct 16, 2007
Well seeing this configuration it feels safe and sound remembering the fact that you are getting the best out of your money.thanks for the configuration
