The original Half-Life game was a milestone in the evolution of the FPS genre, and a trendsetter of sorts that showed developers how they should go about making a truly awesome, believable and immersive FPS title. When Half-Life 2 was announced in E3 2003, the level of hype that surrounded it was truly unreal. The game was scheduled for a 2003 release, but that date got pushed back for a long time, until it finally saw the light of day in November 2004. Although I felt that the original Half-Life kicked HL2’s ass, Half-Life 2 was really awesome regardless. What’s more? HL2 gave us the most scalable engine out there – the Source Engine, which was used in countless games after it, and will continue to do so for some really good titles such as Left4Dead and Team Fortress 2.
