Gaming Annoyances 101: The Industry Factor

Ignorance
This characteristic seems more rampant among parents, politicians and uninformed media who are hell-bent on blaming video games for everything out there. Someone gets murdered? Blame it on games. Someone gets raped? Blame it on games. Someone goes postal and shoots half his school? Blame it on – you guessed it – games!

What most of these people don’t realize is that half the nuts out there who claim video games corrupt fragile little minds aren’t supposed to be playing those games in the first place since they categorically carry an M/18 rating. A big deal’s been made about Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto series and the so-called scandalous content it brings to the table, but there’s nothing in there an 18-year old hasn’t seen. I'd urge parents to maintain a tighter leash over their underaged children and instill some good values in them since developers have enough to worry about without some lawsuit looming over their heads.

I would also urge Fox not to entertain clueless bimbos who are of the opinion that Mass Effect allows players to indulge in 'Full Digital Nudity and Sex'. Its people like this who give humanity a bad name.

Embargoes
One aspect that's gone from bad to worse in recent times is the dreaded Embargo we journalists are expected (forced is more like it) to adhere to as and when we get a sneak peek of a new game. Now being a game journalist, it’s my duty to give you, the reader, the lowdown on a particular game – be it good, bad, or downright crappy. But this unholy document forged from the darkest pits of corporate hell forbids me to do so.

So my question to all the developers out there is: why show us the damn game in the first place if we aren’t allowed to talk about it and discuss it with our audience?

Glad to chip in with the plug. Publishers should know they shouldn't take gamers for granted.

Thanks for the acknowledgement Avi, i always loved ur articles in Skoar too bad u had to quit. I guess that explains it all then... badjag's acting weirder day by day and i wouldn't be surprised if Skoar bites the dust sooner or later. That would be sad...
Grim @ May 12, 2008
Thanks for the heads up coolpcguy. Have made the changes accordingly.

Avinash, YouGamers carries a report stating that Bioware will not be using the 10-day-phone-home-activation scheme, instead will be going for an online 1-time activation, and re-activation will have to be done for DLC

Kotaku also mentions that it[the activation scheme] ownt be used for Spore

bravo, finally a proper article to grace this site.

i do disagree with the last point, developers are devs not porters, the ports are bad, coz well not coz they are lazy, but coz 1 they dnt know how to do it well, 2 u make a game for 3 years and are asked to do again-obviusly the quality wnt show and 3 3rd party porter may not completely grasp the game/not paid well/not enuf time to port it well
ports will always be bad man, get over it

more points to add,
sh***y reviews based on hype, i dnt get how gta 4 with old school missions can get 10/10
fanboyism, cant do a proper discussion in a forum with these losers around
Madan @ May 12, 2008
Yes Grim, that would be me but I don't work for them anymore.

"even though they’re paying as much for the game as their console counterparts" - Not entirely accurate. It may be the case for certain PS2 titles, but comparing nexgen console game prices and PC games is absurd, particularly in India. PC games here are now DIRT cheap, while PS3 titles cost upward of 2,000 bucks and '360 games cost 1750+. And abroad, PC games cost half as much as their nexgen console counterparts. The only cost-related argument I would have bought is initial investment, but that scenario has also changed because of the mandatory purchase of an HDTV for console gamers. Other than the less-than-clinical finish to the article, I agree with everything else said. Good job.

Excellent Article. Probably one of the best I've read so far.

Grim @ May 12, 2008

Jay CENA @ May 11, 2008
Especially with the EA part...it sucks !....that is insane...i mean logging on to the internet for them so that they can keep a tag on us ?....
Gamer @ May 11, 2008
Totally agree with the article !!!
Gamer @ May 11, 2008
True. Take any racing game that was built for consoles and when its ported to PCs you simply cannot play with the keyboard. It actually becomes irritating that such good graphics and options are available but the controls make it "absolutely" crappy.
DarkLord @ May 11, 2008
Avinash...you are absolutely right ....p.c gamers aren't just some 2nd grade side show... it's high time developers took notice!!
