Performance
Both setups are time-consuming but not too bad. It depends on which direction you want to take: the PC route or direct hardware. I found that Philip has a better edge as its learning capabilities are easier to use, and faster. Both can program macros, e.g., you can program ‘watch DVD’ and have it do a string of operations like turn on your TV, DVD player, and sound system on the go. This is a great feature, and both remotes perform it well.
The range is pretty much similar, as both remotes are IR only; there's no RF (so you can forget about through-the-wall and round-the-corner control). Line-of-sight performance of both was commendable; so the two are equally matched in this regard.
Conclusion
All said, I like the Philips SRU 9600 slightly better than the Logitech Harmony 885, as the former costs Rs 12,990, while the latter is Rs 16,495. The features are well matched, with a few exceptions. For instance, if a touchscreen LCD is a big deal for you, the SRU 9600 has it, but if lightweight and ergonomic shape is your deal, the Harmony 885 shines. It's true that Logitech’s higher-end remotes are much better, but Philips wins this battle largely on the price angle.
