Top 3 Dual-Core Ultra-Portables
By: Jayesh Mansukhani   |   Mar 06, 2007
In the past, whenever we have done an ultra-uortable roundup our prime focus has always been on battery life. In this roundup, we will focus on ultra-portables that not only offer above-average battery life but dual-core processors and great connectivity. Moreover these laptops do not skimp on vital functions such as a full sized keyboard.

We have however taken a conscious decision not to include laptops with 11.1-inch screens. These tiny laptops compromise on processing power and screen resolutions and do not offer a very comfortable computing experience. Hence we have chosen to leave them out of this feature.

Asus U5F

Asus really needs no introduction. They have steadily released some impressive products that are appreciated for the quality of their products and the performance they offer. One such product is the Asus U5F which was introduced in 2006. The Asus U5F was a 12.1 inch ultra-portable laptop that ran on the Core Duo platform and had been featured in quite a few of our previous roundups. It has now been "refreshed" with new specifications and hence makes a return to this list.

The Asus U5F weighing a mere 1.5 Kg is built on the Core2Duo platform and features the full range of processors to choose, from the T7400 which is clocked at 2.33 GHz to the T5500 processors which are clocked at 1.66 GHz. The LCD panel on the U5F, has also been upgraded and is now a 12.1 ColorShine LCD with a native resolution of 1024x768. It is now powered by Asus’s excellent splendid screen technology which promises excellent color output with great contrast and sharpness. We have seen this technology being used before and it delivers promising results.

For system memory, Asus has equipped the U5F with 512 MB of DDR2 memory (upgradable to 1.5 GB) and an 80 GB HDD rounds up storage space. In terms of peripheral connectivity, this laptop is fully equipped with 3 USB 2.0 slots, 1 Express card slot, a Firewire Slot and an 8-in-1 media card reader. The U5F is an interesting choice when it comes to battery life. It allows a customer to select batteries that are a tradeoff in terms of the increased weight vs. battery life available. The base battery is able to easily offer around 4 hours and the higher capacities can easily scale 6 ½ hours with moderate levels of use.

The U5F, with its powerful dual-core processor, excellent 12.1 inch display panel and great battery life makes it an ideal ultra-portable for road warriors. Unfortunately ASUS, in keeping with its Indian pricing policy seems to have missed a trick here. It has priced the U5F at Rs. 80,000 upwards, putting it out of reach of most customers.
